British Transport Police (BTP) is the national police force for the rail network throughout Great Britain. We are the ‘Guardians of the Railway,’ putting passenger safety at the heart of what we do. Our values are simply: We Care, We Do the Right Thing, We Strive to Be Better Every Day, We Are One BTP, and We Are Proud to Protect. Join us and help create an environment where we can all be our best every day.

The Opportunity

Are you a qualified accounting professional looking to apply your technical expertise in a role that drives organisational transformation?

British Transport Police has an exciting opportunity for a Financial Accountant to join our Finance team. This is a unique chance to play a key role in shaping the future of finance within BTP as we deliver a significant finance transformation programme, including the implementation of a new finance system.

As our technical accounting specialist, you will provide expert advice and guidance across a range of high-profile projects, ensuring complex transactions and transformation activities are accounted for accurately and in line with relevant accounting standards. You will lead on statutory financial reporting, support a strong financial control environment, and work closely with auditors and senior stakeholders to ensure sound financial governance across the organisation.

This role offers the opportunity to influence strategic decision-making, improve financial processes through innovation and technology, and make a lasting impact within a nationally important organisation.

What you'll be doing

  • Providing expert technical accounting advice across Finance and the wider organisation, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and best practice.
  • Preparing annual statutory financial statements, quarterly reporting and technical accounting papers.
  • Leading on capital and revenue accounting matters, supporting business projects and transformation initiatives.
  • Working with auditors and key stakeholders to strengthen financial controls, implement recommendations, and support the successful delivery of a new finance system.

What you'll bring to the team

  • A recognised CCAB accounting qualification (ACCA, CIPFA, ICAEW, ICAI, ICAS or equivalent) supported by ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • Significant experience in financial accounting, financial reporting or audit, including preparation and review of statutory accounts.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, including experience applying IFRS and ideally FReM requirements within a complex organisation.
  • Experience providing clear and practical accounting advice, alongside excellent stakeholder management, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience delivering process improvements through automation, digital tools and AI-enabled solutions.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with internal and external auditors and implement audit recommendations.

What we offer

  • 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays, increasing to 30 days after 5 years.
  • Family-friendly policies, including up to 26 weeks paid maternity and adoption leave.
  • Bespoke benefits platform and Blue Light Card access.
  • Salary sacrifice options for cycles, home technology, gym membership, and electric vehicles.
  • Interest-free annual rail season ticket loan after 6 months.
  • Access to the Transport Benevolent Fund for health, welfare, and financial support.
  • Development opportunities, including fully funded apprenticeships.
  • Excellent Pension Scheme: We offer the BTP GPP Police Staff Pension Scheme, administered by Royal London.
