About the Team/role We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our well established team as a Primary Mental Health Worker. Our Primary Mental Health Team (PMHT) in Reading was set up in 2008 to offer early intervention for children and young people who are at risk of developing serious mental health problems. Since then, we have further evolved and are now essential in filling a gap between early intervention Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs) and more specialist Getting More Help (CAMHS) services.
We are a diverse and experienced team of practitioners with a range of evidence informed therapeutic backgrounds. Our team is integrated with the strong, established, and stable Educational Psychology Service (EPS), led by the Acting Principal Educational Psychologist.
We provide psychological therapies in schools and colleges and include systemic ways of working with children aged 5-18. We work within the Thrive model and have close relationships with the wider mental health teams as well as the social work, family, and youth work teams within Brighter Futures for Children. We ensure that children receive support at the Getting Help level, therefore preventing escalation to higher services, and we are proud to make a difference in children’s lives. We offer therapeutic interventions that are impactful and that lead to significant changes.
Our Primary Mental Health Team is also an integral part of the School Links Project which provides regular mental health surgeries within schools.

As Shield team’s practice has developed in relation to exploitation, we are seeing harmful sexual behaviour at times intertwine with the sexual and criminal exploitation cohorts.&nbsp;&nbsp; The remit of the team is therefore being expanded to offer specialist harmful sexual behaviour interventions.&nbsp;
You should have a good understanding of child development, safeguarding, and the challenges families face when dealing with exploitation and harmful sexual behaviour and other external harms. Strong communication, planning, and partnership working skills are essential, as is the ability to build trusted relationships with parents and carers.
The primary focus will be working with children and delivering parenting support to families facing multiple and complex challenges mainly harmful sexual behaviours and/or exploitation. This is a key role in delivering targeted, coordinated interventions to parents, carers, and families with children and young people aged 0–25.
The targeted interventions will help parents and carers develop the skills and confidence they need to support their children’s wellbeing and development. You will deliver hands-on children and parenting support and therapeutic interventions using a relationship-based approach, aiming to improve outcomes for the whole family. You will also support parents in managing challenging behaviour and preventing escalation, helping them respond confidently and constructively to complex situations at home.
You will also undertake holistic child harmful sexual (AIM) and exploitation assessments and lead on the development and delivery of outcome-focused family plans. You will work closely with families, professionals, and partner agencies to reduce harms associated with harmful sexual behaviour and exploitation and anti-social behaviour. In this role, you will be expected to contribute to safeguarding processes and risk management and take the lead in coordinating support, ensuring services are responsive and effective.
A key aspect of the role is working in partnership with the police and other agencies to identify and respond to threats and risks in the community. This includes supporting intelligence gathering, mapping activity, and attending multi-agency forums to ensure timely action and joined-up working.&nbsp;
As part of the Advanced social worker role you will assist and deputise in the absence of the Team Manager and provide high quality professional supervision, reflective supervision, appraisal, and support to others as appropriate identify and develop potential within other staff.
